Title: First bands?
Post by: wonderword on May 11, 2007, 01:00:40 AM
I had an idea for a thread like this on the bus ride home. Hopefully nobody already made one!

Every time I meet a new j-rock fan, the first thing I always ask them is "what band got you into j-rock?" So I thought I'd ask Tonberry the same question. When did you start listening to j-rock, what bands got you guys into it, and why?

I started listening to it back when I was in seventh or eighth grade. One of my ridiculously nerdy friends who was in the lol animu club with me at school brought me a burned CD with all sorts of assorted Japanese music on it. It was pretty mainstream stuff - Gackt, Ayumi Hamasaki, that kind of thing. Even as an uneducated young'un, j-pop and Gackt made me throw up a little in my mouth, but one band on the CD stuck out - Luna Sea.

I don't know how songs from their Mother era got onto this CD, packed awkwardly between Gackt's warbling vibrato and Hamasaki's harpy-like screech, but I'm glad that they did. As a white kid living in South Texas, in the middle of the ghetto, surrounded by gangster rap and Tejano music, hearing Rosier for the first time was a completely new experience for me. I didn't even care that I couldn't understand a word of the language (and still can't). It just sounded so damn cool I couldn't help but listen to it.

I was a hardcore Luna Sea fan for the better part of that year. Through stuff like Kazaa and Napster I managed to scrape together the entirety of Mother, Style and Eden. The first two got much more play time than the last one, since Eden sounds like it was recorded on Saran wrap. But that isn't important.

From there it branched outward. I got into more of the older bands. X-Japan, Kuroyume, Buck-Tick, et cetera. Then the new wave of bands hit around the early/mid 2000's and my interest shifted to them. And now I find myself wishing I had more of the older stuff, since it's still some how more interesting to my ears. I could listen to any pre-Lunacy Luna Sea forever and never get tired of it. Lately, I get bored of VK singles within a week. But this isn't important either.

Sorry for the length, I tend to get carried away when I start threads, because I have a narcissistic streak the size of the San Andreas Fault. I also probably hit the Return key too much.

What about YOU guys? If I wanted to make a thread in which I talked to myself, I would've just... made a thread in which It alked to myself. What were YOUR first bands? Who made you start listening and who kept you listening?

My first girlfriend really got me kicking. I had listened to Japanese music before but it was only from anime and such. Then my girlfriend, Rae-Rae, in sixth grade sent me my first ever Jrock song, Illuminati by Malice Mizer. To say the least this boy was hooked from that moment on. She began to send me large messes of stuff, mainly old school Dir en grey and some Malice Mizer. Now remember I'm only in 6th grade and I am blaring songs like Illuminati, Umbrella and so on. I of course liked Gackt back then (what a dumbass I was), Miyavi and all the mainstream. It wasn't until I had met the original poster on this thread did I get into indies stuff. However, I don't remember how it started but for a time I had fallen away from Jrock but soon returned when I had my first taste of Plastic Tree. To say the least this band is near and dear to my heart and always will be. While they were not the first, they were one of them and they revived me into my love of music when everything had seemed so hopeless before. However, Dir en grey is still dear to my heart for having started me on my way but that is their older stuff, not their most recent (rather shitty) music. Every time I hear Illuminati my heart and mind still trip up in my memories of when I had first heard it. It was NOTHING like what I had listened to before which was mainly the poppy shit you hear as anime openings and closings. While I have slightly fallen from the mainstream I still won't forget what the bands who started me on my way.

First bands were the typical: X, Glay, L'Arc... I knew about X since 1998, but at the time I wasn't into japanese music, I just thought "these japanese punks sure are crazy".
In 2001 I sarted listening to X more gradually, Glay aswell andmaking some research about them found about the term "visual kei". At this time I also got into Janne Da Arc.
In late 2001 I started listening to indies bands visual bands and by this time I was hooked. My favorite indies band at that time was Lamiel.
Then I got into Malice Mizer and Dir en grey, innevitable. I was also trying a lot of different indies bands in early 2002, one of them were Aioria which is one of my favorite bands nowdays.
After listening to many bands I realized a LOT of visual bands sucked, but I kept listening to the ones I liked anyway, just I stopped blindly listening to everything visual.
I followed the ex-Malice Mizer members' works (well, mostly Kozi and Mana). Then I found many other great bands like Amadeus, Raphael... I like bands with classical influence.
Around 2003 I discovered Da'vid/shito:aL, and I remembered one of the members there was in another bands I liked, Aioria... then I became a Misa fan and to this day he's my favorite musician and one of the main reasons I still listen to VK.

ps: i could never get much into Luna Sea... except for a few songs like Rosier or Tonight, I never found them fascinating. But I respect them for being one of the most important bands on the early days.

Just an addendum: you guys don't have to limit yourselves to visual kei. While I may not like every genre of Japanese music, if you got into the scene through j-hip-hop or j-indie or whatever, feel free to post about it.

i started when me was 11/12 ish and back then it was jpop...i believe the first song was Dream - my will ...back when they were just 3 members..one of my anime friends gave it to me because i had just  watched inuyasha and the theme was stuck inn my head...heard the full song and hated it ....seriously it was terrible xD...then it was v6 gah they made me want to shoot myself...then i heard ayumi hamasaki ... hated it right away when she does that horrible thing with her voice that sounds like a dying chipmunk .... then gackt ...hate from the start once again...then next was morning musume -dies- with all this hate i wonder why i kept trying haha xD...it wasn't until finally i heard the beautiful sounds of Do As infinity and the brilliant green that i thought OMG this is amazing i'm so totally into azn music now look at mez!!! yay! so from then on i got into the azn music thingy mostly by watching shows like revolution and pop japan t.v. on the azn network (formally the international channel) and blindly buying Cds from artists i figured i liked based of those things until i discovered nanokiero and the world of illegal downloads and forums and what not...

so from there i stayed  into like j-pop/ hip-hop and rnb and like normal J-rock, for the most part i kinda shied away from the visual stuff till i turned 15/16 ish and i didn't think it was so freaky anymore ...my first band at that time was dir en grey (although i guess technically they were no longer Visu at the time...) which is strange cuz they kinda have everything i don't like in bands (ie. excessive screaming) and yet i love them and kyo's excessive scream (it's newer > older for me though both are great) ...me honestly don't know why  but it is =_=... from there more vk stuffs (like my current 2nd favs alice nine...because Do As is always number 1 xD)  and i guess I'm still discovering more stuff in the indie vk section...although i still listen to all the old stuffs too i just love my music too much and often times i still prefer my good ol' school tracks dawg ^^

First actual j-rock band I heard: Phi, one of Issay's previous projects.
Band that made me finally fall in love with j-rock: Luna Sea

That was about 6 years ago, and I moved on from there. Won't bore you with all the details.  ;)

The first japanese artist I ever liked was Ayumi Hamasaki.. Then from there I got into Gackt, Malice Mizer, etc.. I loved them, but it was Lareine that got me into visual kei and inspired a love for the art. Lareine is still my favorite  :-*

Before that, I didn't listen to any music at all. I was arond 11/12 at the time, and before that I would always tell people I hated music(it was true. heh) and they'd stare at me like I was crazy. I was an odd kid.

i've honestly only been really into jrock for a year. maybe a little more, but basically a year.

the first things i heard were just stuff in anime from quite a few years ago, like Two-Mixx in Gundam Wing, and TM Revolution and L'arc en Ciel in Rurouni Kenshin. i also really digged all the songs by The Pillows in FLCL, they really blew my mind. but i didnt really get into jrock until maybe a little more than a year ago when my friend had me listen to Dir en grey. it was mostly stuff from Withering to Death, and it really amazed the shit out of me (yes, i LOVE withering to death). the first band that i could really really enjoy and not care about the language barrier (i know very very little japanese). then my friends also got me into Gazette, High and Mighty Color, and Alice Nine, whom none of which at the time i liked as much as Dir en grey, but i started to get more into other jrock bands. i really ended up loving HandMC a whole lot, i loved Ichirin no Hana and a bunch of their other heavy songs, they were like my number two band to Diru. then i started to get more into Gazette songs, since i really liked their diversity in music (the first songs i heard were Ruder and Cassis... quite different songs..). but i didnt really get crazy into them until i heard NIL and then Filth in the beauty later on (hey like i said im a newbie). and along the way i heard a bunch of other bands too, some that didnt really have much affect. but yeah now i still am crazily into Dir en grey and Gazette, and i also love MUCC and Girugamesh and D'espairsRay and a bunch of others. thats basically the story. theres not much to it haha.

my first band was loudness . Not to far by dead end. My father got me into rock , and he happened to really like Pink Floyd and Loudness alot. =0 I've been listening to J-music since the late 80s

My first vk band was dead end and Seikima II. =p ( I'm sure alot of people would say "OMG B-T was visual. Since they are like an early and top favorite of mine , but alas , they were only visual for a few album , stopped and brought it back with 13th floor , either way , B-T is one of the few JP bands that are beyond being put into a genre. )

My current favs include Fujifabric , Mr.Children , Creature Creature , Kimeru ( I HIGHLY doubt anyone here has heard of him , since I just wrote/uploaded and did his page on last.fm ) and last but not least Sparta Locals.

I listened almost the same bands than now, why should I leave them anyway, they still rulz  (X, Kuroyume, Luna Sea, Gackt, Rouage, L'arc en ciel, MYV, DLQ, Malice Mizer, and all the new indie movement  ::))  the difference, I was never listened J-pop before, only rock, I thought JPOP was crap, now that I'm more open to all kind of sounds and styles I can proudly say "I really like J-MUSIC"  ;D rock, visualrock, rock-pop, just pop.... I was kind of stupid  then, Japan Pop really rocks, isn't like american shitty artist like Britney Spears and all the others, people shouldn't be afraid of try to listen pop sometimes...

Kimeru

Eh? Not that pop guy?

Anyway, I got into Japanese music via anime, like so many others. I guess the "rock"est band I liked at first was Porno Graffitti. (I still like them, but their recent stuff has been a bit unsatisfying.) I think it was about 6 years ago or so. I can't really remember how it went, but I'm pretty sure it grew the most from this yahoo group I used to be in. Of course there was the typical anime-opening-song type generic pop, but I didn't like much of it. Again like many others, Gackt led me to Malice Mizer, which of course led me to the visual-kei. Somewhere I got disinterested and moved to the regular rock. Also somewhere in the sequence came techno/dance/electronic or whatever, and shibuya-kei. Now I listen to a lot of 'indie' or whatever the hell they're called, rock with electronic stuff, and an embarrassing amount of boyband music. I've been into jazz a lot too, but it's sometimes hard to find stuff that I like 'cause I'm terrible at putting music into genres. Then there's the ones I have a weakness for in any language: R&B, hip-hop, rap. I like almost anything, really. It's hard on my bank account. :\

Akira gets to tell a story! ^^;;

Let's see...when I was a little kid, like around 5-years-old, I was getting to know my father since my parents had divorced when I was born. He was a retired Navy veterain (my dad was 51 when I was born) and had spent time in various countries around the world. So little Akira was watching good old Sailor Moon in Japanese one saturday morning and my dad noticed I was singing the opening theme in Japanese. Asked me if I liked it and I said yes. He asked me why since I couldn't understand it, did I like it? So I told him it really didn't matter if I couldn't understand the words, the meaning was still there.

My father being the awesome man that he is dug out of his closet an old viynl record of X-Japan he had found awhile back and asked me if I wanted to hear it. Thus JRock was born into Akira's life <3

Now I'm nearly 21-years-old and am aspiring to be a Translator. I tutor various classes in Japanese, I still watch anime, and yes...I still love JRock. I'm going to the JRock Revolution in a week up in L.A. and really despite a lot of things my life couldn't be better. I honestly believe that JRock had a hand in it.

JRock buddies makes the best friends :P

In case you were wondering my father is 72 now and he still offers me random JRock bands to listen to XD

My first Japanese band was L'Arc~en~Ciel, and I heard them for the first time nearly 6 years ago. A friend of mine had a Japanese penfriend and that penfriend had sent her an audio tape with some L'Arc~en~Ciel songs on it. So my friend let me listen to it and I was hooked. They've been my favourite band ever since :) They got me interested in Japan and in music in general (before I listened to them, I wasn't interested in music at all).

After L'Arc, first Malice Mizer and Dir en grey followed, and from there on I can't remember anymore.

I got curious about jrock about 1,5 years ago after reading some articles in newspapers and magazines. The very first song I found and listened to was Kodou by Dir en grey. That song was much better to me than anything I would have expected so I started searching for more. I bought Withering to Death and I really liked their mixture of brutality and nice melodies and the fact that their singer could both growl and scream and actually sing as well. Something I've been missing in a lot of bands I actually like.

Language has never been an issue for me. I've already listened to so much music in all sorts of 'exotic' languages. To me it's the music that counts and the feeling that it evokes in me - irrespective of any language.

However, after listening to some of their older songs I lost interest for a while and discovered other bands, like D'espairsRay, D, 12012 and many many more which I came to like and which I think are easier to get into. It was only after watching some of Dir en grey's live stuff that I re-discovered my interest in them.

At the moment I listen to quite a lot of jrock but I like a whole lot of other music as well. I just see it as a diversification of my musical taste and knowledge which in my opinion is always a good thing.

I have a hard time believing this.

A 5 year old saying this "So I told him it really didn't matter if I couldn't understand the words, the meaning was still there. ". I think a 5 year would say stuff. It sounds funny or they are cool or stuff. But not "yea the meaning is there".

ROFL. So when you were 5 he was 51 and already retired.SO he must been in the army when he was in japan lets say till he was? 45? So minus 6 years. And your now 21. so 21 - 5 = 16 . So 16 years ago your dad was 51 and lets say he was in japan short before he got retired about 45. So 16+6=22 years ago. 2007 - 22 = 1985. So barely any japanese knew X japan then. But your dad did.

Maybe I am just wrong. But I have a hard time to believe you.

EDIT:
And according to myself and a friend X Japan never had a vinyl recod.
Care to give an explanation? I could be wrong, but we will see.

This is a conversation I had with my father, 72, earlier today...we were driving around doing errands...this is why he's awesome...well, one of the many reasons

Akira: What?
Dad: This song...is this that 'JRock' you were telling me about?
Akira: XD no, no, this is just techno

My father retired the Navy a long time before I was born, but he still had Japanese friends. He really loved Japan, and he still does, I obviously have no idea about the vinyl record, as my father had a lot of them so I assumed it was a vinyl, it's what I remember, regardless of whether or not that is what actually happaned I have no idea, could have been a tape, but I was like 5 and I remember a vinyl so that's what I said. I'll gladly call up my father and ask him about it to get that part straight if you so desire. I'm actually doubting that part of my memory myself now that you mention it.

By the way,

My father was born in 1935.

2007 - 1935 = 72

I was born in 1986, and as I said my father was 51 when I was born...

1986 - 1935 = 51

2007 - 1986 = 21 (though my birthday is in August so I am currently still 20)

I've heard 5-year-olds say some intelligent things, believe it or not, kids are a lot smarter than people give them credit for, but again, this is something I can't prove so I digress.

I honestly don't mind if you don't believe me, that's your right as a human being. My father does know a lot, however, it wasn't called JRock when he was introducing it to me, or that's not what we called it. Just "Japanese Rock" or just "Rock" even. Abbreviations don't make sense to him sometimes. In all truth X-Japan was one of two bands he introduced to me and the rest I found, like the rest of you, branched out from there. I give him much more credit that he actually did, but he deserves it so I don't mind. Apparently, you do. I honestly understand that it's hard to believe, but other than having my father tell you himself, I have no way of proving it to you. So please take it as you will.

EDIT: I looked it up, and you were right there were no vinyl records of X-Japan, I'm sorry in assuming so without doing my research. I thought it was, but apprently not. Forgive my ignorance. My memories are off it seems :P

X did have vinyl records, the "I'll kill you" EP was released in 1985, as well as some demo tapes. also the first editions of Blue Blood and Vanishing Vision were in vinyl.

Still I find it hard to believe when people start saying they got into japanese rock when they were little kids (i've read many of this BS on the internet, but you clearly notice they're such n00bs who started from anime openings - not saying this is bad anyway, just not wanting to accept it and make up stupid stories about "my aunt is mana's friend and I got the first moi dix mois CD in 1993").
in this case, it's hard to believe a retired army man got a record from an independent heavy metal band from Japan, but who knows... it'd be funny to see a picture of your dad holding the X vinyl btw! :P

he's retired NAVY and yes I did get into it from an anime opening, I have no shame in that. I'll ask my dad if he still has it and to take a picture with it, I do have a photo of him hugging a hide plushie though, I'll go and find it and post it if you like. :P

I didn't think it was so hard to beleive but maybe it's just cause I lived with the man XD oh well, I understand everyone's arguement, I don't think I'd believe it either, reading it over. My father did introduce me to X-Japan though, whether or not anyone believes it. ^^

My first J-rock band was B'z.. i remember wich song it was and it's still one of my favourites from them: Love Phantom. I remember the feeling of listening something that looks like Opera style of instrumental (sth that i always liked) and then he started to sing in japanese.
At first, listening to japanese was really strange, i was 15 and for me, english was always the best language ever. (but unfortunatly not my mother language .__.)
But with time i started to love it and then i listened to other things. L'Arc~en~Ciel, Aucifer, Hironobu Kageyama. Ayumi Hamasaki's album called Duty.. another surprise for me. I always thought that japanese women sounded like the animes, really cute and no voice, but she was amasing. I discovered Do as infinity and BoA both with women vocalists and very good singers too.

My first Visual Band was X-Japan and then Malice Mizer. Then slowly i got into other things when i started to have internet. It was Dir en Grey, Gackt (solo work), Moi dix Mois, Hide (solo) and then a lot of other bands like Gazette, Vidoll, D'espairs Ray, Schwarz Stein, etc.

Now i listen to all kind of japanese music but my favourite type's still J-rock. ^^

I have no shame in saying I got into foreign music through anime.  On my own at an anime convention setting jrock cds and jpop cds; I decided to just buy an album by recommendation of the seller.  It was Gackt's Mars album.  Well I listened to it a bit; didn't like it LOL and sold it to my friend for $10.  Now I wish I still had it :P.  Oh well; then I found this website later on call project J or something and it talked about various bands and offered up a single MP3 by each band.  So I found I liked Hide, Glay, L'arc en ciel, and Malice Mizer.  Well Syuni Kiss sold me and I couldn't believe that was Gackt single.  I went out of my way to find more MM.  Then found a live journal community and a girl uploaded a bunch of Psycho le Cemu for me.  And after that I was sold on Jrock forever.  Shortly after I found this site and was downloading everything.  I didn't even know the bands; I was just getting everything.

Technically the first Jrock artist I listened to was Shazna and then Pierrot as their music was on an anime soundtrack I bought.  But it really wasn't until Malice Mizer and Psycho le Cemu that I got heavily into Jrock.  That was like...five or more years ago I guesstimate.

First band I heard about and listened to was the Gazette. The song was COCKROACH. 2 years ago.
Second would be Malice Mizer. Then the obvious, Dir en grey and Moi dix Mois.

And it was an emo kid who showed J-rock to me. Life has quite unexpected things. <_<;

My first J-rock encounter, I was young as well, but I certainly wasn't as young as 5 and there's no big crazy elaborate "dad was in the Navy" thing going on. Actually it was pretty simple and more of an accident.

I was staying at a friends house in Manhattan because we had been escorted to a concert (we were only 12) and her mother had some things to do the next day, before dropping me off where I live. Her mother wanted to make a stop at Book Off to sell some old CDs, books, etc. and I had never been to a Japanese store of any kind before, so upon entering I kind of stuck close to my friend and her mother. I guess I felt out of place or whatever, being a lone white child with a Japanese mother and daughter in a Japanese store. Anyway, eventually I wandered towards CDs and just kept looking at the different covers, and band names if they were in english. At the time I had just got into harder, darker rock so I was drawn in by the next CD I picked up. BUCK-TICK's "Aku no Hana" album cover stuck out like a sore thumb. Five guys dressed in rather "goth" attire, it just seemed to say "buy me". It was about 13 bucks if I remember correctly. I popped it into my CD player and it was much poppier than I had expected, but none the less, catchy. Needless to say I hadn't realized the album was from 1990 until like.. a week later, but it definitely changed my views on foreign music and opened me up to a whole new "world".

After that came Luna Sea, Kuroyume, X, L'arc, etc. but slowly. I didn't jump right in. BUCK-TICK is by far my favorite Japanese band for many years now and I've went to quite some lengths to collect almost everything they've released (excluding demos, live albums, and compilations).

Yeah, that's the gist of it though.

Then my obsession just snowballed from there....FIN♥

The first Japanese band I listened to, knowing it was Japanese, was X; closely followed by Mucc. Mucc were the band which got me hooked and made me start learning Japanese.
Before that time came The 5,6,7,8s, Pizzicato Five and Anthem. (Hey, I didn't know until now that Anthem were Japanese ^o^; ) Maybe some other heavy metal bands with lyrics in English as well.

Mmmm... technically it'll be X Japan for me since my bro had Dahlia since I was a kid, but the 1st thing I really went to download was Malice Mizer sometime about 3 years back. Cant remember why the hell I did that though... think I was on some Gackt fever at that time XD Shortly after that I went on to get Dir en grey's Vulgar after learning they were related to Yoshiki...

Iv only been listening to J-Rock for just over a year & what a good year for music it has been  ;D.

I was looking up at Final Fantasy Advent Children & Dirge on You Tube & came across the video for Redemption. I was instantly hooked after hearing that song

Couple of days later i found a couple of fan vids of A.C with Dir En Grey as the music, id had a friend who was always trying to get me into them so i watched the videos paying more interest in the music.

Since then iv just gotten into more & more such as Kagrra, Psycho Le Cemu, D'espairs Ray, Janne Da Arc, L'arc~En~Ciel & so on.

The best thing IMO is that since iv not been listening to J-Rock that long i have such a wide selection of bands to hear rather than this 'emo' music where iv heard it all

Malice Mizer and Miyavi. I can't remember what was first. I heard Jibun Kakumei from my friend Tim and I liked it. And then I watched the pv for Beast of Blood by Malice Mizer and it... well it changed my life and made me what I am today. No lies

my story is rather strange and long so...I instantly fell in love with the PV for "Killing Me" by L'Arc~en~Ciel (<3!) and then there was a crazy L'arc obsession (including me getting a wannabe tet haircut that ultimatly failed anyway) . then I liked an cafe for like, a week. and I just started going all over the internet learning and listening to different types of bands. I love indies bands. very much.  8D

My first Jrock band was Penicillin. I had heard the re-make of Chaos when I was in the 6th or 7th grade online. After that, I had learned of X Japan, Diru, Malice Mizer, and many of the other big names through browsing various sites. Sooo...as short as my story is, that's how I got into Jrock =3.

I live out of the school district i attended, but while going to a multi-lingual middle school for Japanese, My neighbors were 2 yrs older than me I was about 11 in '99 and we were in a band and back then, dial up times, it was about finding the craziest hardest most esoteric type of music. Somehow i came across Yokan thinking it a was porn (mislabled). Two weeks later I scraped $35 and imported Gauze. Then I bought Missa, still one of my favorite CDs. Yet, it wasn't until about a year later, when I discovered Cali≠Gari and eroguro altogether did I find what I was looking for. Also, like you I'm stuck out in San Antonio, Tx but there's always been a nice following of V-kei since our sister city is Kumamoto.
