Title: Heavier stuff?
Post by: xxdarkgeminixx on October 19, 2007, 12:20:33 AM
I have to say, I haven't bothered to really listen to a lot of new bands lately. At least, not on the Japanese side of things. I've been very obsessed with the metal that's been coming out of Finland and the Scandinavian countries and that's been taking up much of my time. So I come to you, Tonberry users, asking for guidance:

What are some good metal (real metal, none of that screaming crap) bands out of Japan these days? Stuff in the vein of Girugamesh.

Girugamesh isnt metal. they are more hardcore than metal. if you want REAL metal listen to Anthem.

I disagree with you on the Girugamesh thing, but that's a subject for another topic. I'll definitely give Anthem a listen.

But what kind of metal u are listening to...?
if u want sth from heavy metal i propose hizaki grace project (maybe Juka's voice is not typical for metal but hizaki's and Teru's solos on guitars are really stunning) Versailles (the same as hizaki but here u have Kamijo on vocal), next... Aikaryu, they're really great (guitar solos and sometimes growling voice). I think that Moi Dix Mois have sth heavier maybe because of monotonous Drums(Mana has no notion of good sound of drums) but guitars are quite good...

U can check this too(but i'm not sureif its exactly metal - i'm confused by all this types of music): Unsraw, exist trace, gemmik...

That's all as for beginning.

What GOD (edit: where did this come from?) you mean by "screaming crap"?  And from what I have heard, Girugamesh aren't metal.

Sex Machineguns
X Japan (duhhh)
Azrael
Intestine Baalism
Doom
Loudness
VRAIN
Aushvitz

Galneryus.

Second'd. Galneryus's "ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE" album is amazing, well, so is every one of their releases, but One For All is the best :].

Heavier music, you say? Why, good sir, I must recommend these bands and artists.

Lareine
Izabel Varosa
D'AIR
Kaya
Juka
Hizaki Grace Project

Enjoy!

Intestine Baalism is probably the most impressive metal act coming out from Japan in recent years. Well and Sigh too if you still don't know them.

You want heavy? You need to give the band, Boris a try. It's Doom Metal/Stoner Rock, but fuck that music is amazing, and blows any VK band trying to be heavy out of the water. Most VK bands do heavy but then they kind of wuss out and have soft stuff in with the heavy. And it doesnt always contrast well. But Boris is amazing, I recently got into them, and I can't get enough. Try them out man. I suggest trying 'Pink' or 'Heavy Rocks'

Actually, I have a question for you all...

Since we're talking about 'heavy' bands...what makes a band 'heavy' in your perspective? Whats your definition of it.

Most of the above bands aside from Sex Machine Guns , Loudness and Anthem can't be called metal in any sense.

I'd suggest

Vio System Divide ( speed / power metal )
Maverick (black metal / not the vk maverick btw )
Davidtz ( power metal with a bit of rap thrown in )
AZRAEL ( Hard Rock / metal )
Alahambra ( Melodic Metal )
BASSAIUM ( one of my fav death metal bands )
Baskerville ( HeavY Metal )
Buzz Cult ( Death Thrash Metal )

Just some of my tops , esp vio system divide and Maverick.
If you want samples or sites , I'll be happy to PM you with some.

Why no one mentioned Sadie in a thread, started with Gilgamesh reference?
Their dekiai, The Trend Killer and Grudge of sorrow releases are pretty good
also, earlier D'espairs ray is rather nice - check out Born and Coll:set;
Deathgaze are very good, but have rather western sound;
Eight remind me of Gilgamesh sometimes, though they're pretty different.

Boris is AMAZING. <3

At any rate , most VK bands attempt to be metal , it's rare to see a actual metal vk band. Not that cheap cop out metal where they have like one or two songs a release that are somewhat metal. Such as Girugumesh and most of these popular bands who are 50/50 pop ballads thrown in , not even real ballads.

X-Japan is hard rock , they were good , but had a slight pop edge to some of thier songs. Kinda like most 80's rock bands. Anthem , SMG , and Loudness rock out and out. A metal band for me is being heavy , mostly heavy , I tend to like death metal more because of the constant guitar work and most death metal guitarists are amazing.

Alot of stuff is deemed metal , that isn't. such as girugumesh , alice9 , ayabie , nightmare , wizard , most vk bands never reach a metal level. Most actual metal bands are not widely known either.

What makes metal for me , is constantly heavy , deep vocals , guitar and drum solos that last more than a min , and the absence of poppy songs in thier disco.

Off-note , it reminds me of how Blue Oyster Cult and Deep Purple were considered Metal a couple of years back.

I also forgot to add Volcano to that list. Volcano is amazing.

wait lol who said they were metal? o.O i suck at genres and can tell that those aren't remotely metal T.T

well he asked for things that are like girugamesh...so i'd go with meth. even though they don't have much out.

I wouldn't say there's metal in vk, but some vk bands are heavy enough to have metal influences that wouldn't quite put them completely in a 'metal' genre.

the only bands that might go in as 'metal' are maybe vargeke, /\ucifer etc?

hmm maybe im wrong lolo. i dunno

a LOT of people confused hard rock with metal.

it saddens me. >__>

LOL @ BOC and Deep Purple being considered 'metal'.

Theres definitely metal in VK. Galneryus, vagerke, Seven Seas and Aikaryu(just to name a few) are all widely accepted as metal bands(though in different subgenres such as power metal) but are visual kei.

Nothing personal to any Gilgamesh fans...but they kinda have a poser-ish metal sound. They should stop being pussies and just go straight up metal with their music, instead of half-assing it with their really really poppy choruses :/.

Again, nothing personal to any fans.

Boris is great but they change style in almost every releases, you have to start with "Heavy Rocks" or "Pink".

well theyre really inspired by american nu-metal stuff like Linkin Park, theyve said it themselves. so it really only makes sense theyd have their heavy-poppy switch offs. its not like they are inspired by Metallica or something.

Metal bands.

Aushvitz
Providence
Serpent

In fact I don't mind if you confused metal or not, because I know what you mean ^^

I also like Girugamesh-like bands or some of the "harder" bands in Japan. The real metal sound described here several times isn't something I personally like, so I guess it is just everything and always a matter of personal preference...

Whatever, I would, like others before me, also tend to say that Sadie are a good band to listen to. Others who you could possibly like are (at least some/most of their songs):
Yaminade
UnsraW
Awoi
Dio -distraught overlord-
lynch. (deathgaze was mentioned before, Hazuki (vocal) is now in lynch.)
-OZ-

As for heavier stuff... I'd definetly give Blood Stain Child a try (as listed above), Dazzle Vision, Gallhammer...

More Suggestions ::  B.A.A.L , Kadennza , Maverick ( I think I did before , and not the shitty vk one ) , The Hate Honey ( one of the best bands ever ) , Envy , Gekigakutai , GunDOG/Pay Money to my Pain , Headphones President , King-Show , Lost Eden , Oto-Oni .

I can think of like 4 mainland chinese/Taiwanese bands that are harder then most of these though.
King Ly Chee , Yaksa  , Qui Hong , TWISTED MACHINE

Very true! However, that's a qualifier "are all widely accepted as ".... but point valid
