Title: female bands
Post by: Alice the Sister on July 15, 2007, 12:06:00 AM
Does anyone like bands with female singers? I know a lot of people don't like bands with female singers, but don't mind females in the band.

I don't want to limit it to Visual Kei, though. There are some good punk bands like Bleach and Midori. And some good experimental stuff like Afrirampo. I tend to like Yuki (ex-Judy and Mary) a bit too even though she's kinda pop music now instead of ...pop-rock.

There's also stuff like exist+trace, hybrid-zombies, kilhi+ice, kokyoku sumire, inugami circus-dan, and ALI project in the visual stuff that I enjoy.

Some people have problems with the voices, (Kana, Mary Rue, or Kokyoku sumire for example). And there's the stereotypical high-pitched Japanese voice people are scared of. Sometimes it's true, but sometimes the vocals can be pretty dynamic or interesting like with Inugami Circus-dan. A lot of the female bands seem to be more unique too...I dunno like I haven't heard any bands that are like Bleach with all males or like Afrirampo.

What's your opinion? You like/dislike girl groups?

actually since the beginning of my liking j-music I've always preferred female vocals to male ones...in fact at first i hated Japanese male vocals xD i admit there are alot of bad ones ie. kana and then of course the typical female jpop singing voice but there are also terrible male vocalist too ...i really don't see the big deal or why one would discriminate between male or female voices...i know before when i didn't like jp male voices it was because i was new and still hadn't heard one that i really liked but once i did i kinda felt stupid for feeling the way i did to begin with =/

Ooo I love female singers! Taia and exist†trace are my favorites, but I also like Area51, Yousei Teikoku (one of those high-pitch voices, that I normally can't stand, but it goes nicely with the music), BAAL, Aya Kamiki, OLIVIA inspi REIRA, and a couple songs from Ali Project. Onmyouza is so-so but the guy singer bothers me after a while and I like some songs from [13], only whats-her-face's voice starts to get on my nerves after a while too.

I love OLIVIA. Not as much as ACO or Tsuchiya Anna , but yes.

I don't care for female vocals in bands , unless it's pop/rock. Metal female vocals are not for me , they just don't convey anger that well.... ( minus Headphones president which is like a female version of Jonathan Davis ).

Derr... I totally forget about stuff like Olivia, Spangle Call Lillie Line, Dazzle Vision, Lucifer Luscious Violenoue, Zwei, Tsuchiya Anna, Taia, Head Phones President, Pistol Valva, noodles, and Shakalabbits. I'm lame.

Oh well.

At any rate, I'm really not a big fan of Onmyouza, I like some of their music, but it doesn't do anything special for me.

Olivia was one of the first J-rock groups I ever found. She holds a special place in my heart. My dad really likes Olivia too.

I like some nana kitade too.

Has anyone heard of UNDER17? I hear that they have a really really really annoying voice.

nana kitade = hate for me xD when i first heard the clip from the song on full metal alchemist i kinda liked it ...then i d/l'd the full song and her voice made me want to kill myself >.< since i've tried to listen to her album but i just can't hmmm...

Onmyouza is okay ...i admit i'm not head over heels for them anymorez but at one time i really really liked them

Hm, I like Youjeen's older solo stuff, Dazzle Vision and Anemone in particular.... Area51 is fine too. Similar to Taia.

But since that topic is here.... I recently made a list of female-fronted vk/angura/related bands in my Last.fm jornal (http://www.last.fm/user/Champ213/journal/2007/06/25/459629/) recently, if somebody wants to check it out or add anything.

Wow, I totally forgot about Inugami Circus-dan!!
Now, I want their stuff D:

Personally, I don't mind them if they're actually singing and not making my ears bleed.
Like the singer to Cherry Filter; she simply amazes me.

But the singer to PINK☆PANDA really bothers me just like 大塚愛.

lol i like pink panda and ai otsuka xD ai otsuka actually has a really nice voice but i'm not so into her cutesy cutesy voice i like her ballady type songs like cherish and kingyo hanabi where she actually sings ...also her live at live earth was really good i even found myself liking the cutesy stuff xD if we wants to  leave the rock band territory for a sec i don't like female singers like ayumi and kumi who do thatthing with their voice i know their was a term for that kind of singing but i forget it now since it's been a long time since i had a serious jpop disscusion... but the only person i think i like who sings kinda like that is yuri from M.O.V.E.

浜崎あゆみ REALLYYYY bothers me.
大塚愛 does too, ever since Tokyo Friends, haha.
Like her new single PEACH.  Just no.  I really wish she could go an octave lower.

椎名林檎 doesn't bother me, though.
I was just thinking about that.

I've pretty much always loved female vocals in any music(Nightwish was the first band I ever really got into). So pretty much anything except for the generic high-pitched Japanese girl(UNDER17 lols) I like. Recently, my favorites are onmyouza, solfege, Renaissance, danger gang, exist trace, area51, taia and AMADEUS(well.. one of their 2 vocalists is female.. so that sorta counts).

off topic: loves hana kimi too ~ one of my favs but i have been holding off on the ending for awhile been taking my time with that one *doesn't want it to end*

back on: omgz please don't get me started =_= *remembers the first time she saw her* nightmares, not that i had to see her to hate her though...she just had to sing...and it's a shame cuz i like the beats of some of her songs ...like  i will only listen to the instrumental of alterna and the only song i can stand with her singing on it is the WALL 5 remix of will ...which has her voice basically vocoded and not as noticeably sucky

I have to admit that I have a big preferance for male vocals versus female ones; no matter what language it is.  But that usually depends on the genre.  Pop; it doesn't really matter to me.  But something about rock music; I really like male singers.  I know it's stereotypical to think only males can pull off rock; and I don't really think that.  Maybe I just haven't heard enough female rock vocalists.  The ones out there that I know of; I don't really like.
Title: Re: female bands
Post by: snickety on July 15, 2007, 06:37:37 AM
I also definitely prefer male vocals for most types of music. For me, sometimes I can overlook a really generic or mediocre male vocalist if the music is awesome or catchy enough, but females have to have something special to get my money. For me, the generic female voices have to go only with disposable pop music for me to enjoy it every once in a while. (Like H!P... I like some of that stuff.  :-X)

But like the singer in Jinn is pretty good, I like her. I don't really like all of their songs, but I dig her voice. Um, Shiina Ringo of course, ACO somewhat, can't really think of any non-pop others. I like Koda Kumi's voice, her music lately has been pretty much crap, though. Emyli is good, too (except those hot pants in her latest video were not hot). So I guess most of the female voices I like are in pop. Except the other night I downloaded a video by Superfly & that woman has a really nice voice.

And to ramble a bit more, I like when the female is backing or not used very often, like in Base Ball Bear and Maximum the Hormone.

I can name dozens. Mostly female vocalists and the rest males, which isn't really that uncommon (check the list I posted above - I guess more than half of the bands belong to that category).
But Necrocircus for example had - I think - 3 girls and one guy, and kanuak had a female guitarist and the rest men. I'm sure there are others.

Yeah, but how many bands of those type that aren't complete failures?

Onmyouza isn't even close to a failure and they are a mixed gender band(female singer, rest are male). Same thing with Inugami Circus Dan.

Doesn't Pleur have a female member?  That's actually not the singer?  IIRC she's the drummer.

I love Pleur. <3

And Maximum the Hormone has a female drummer/vocalist too, even though they're not VK.

Good thing this thread is about female bands, not VK bands.

;)

Pleur and Maximum the Hormone are pretty cool too, IMO.

Chatmonchy is one female band that stands out in my opinion. The band's first full-length album "Mininari" was better than I expected.

yeah she retired from music.

rumours in 2ch says she married a guy from TOKYO YANKEES. (remember this is a rumour, not a fact)
all I can say is that in the pleur mini-album booklet TOKYO YANKEES appear on the "special thanks" (and so do many other bands like Deg, Janne da arc, Raphael, etc, etc, etc)

About Pleur, Kyon sings on "gomen ne noble" in their mini album called "la premieré porte". Before to be in David shito al, she was in female bands, トラッシュ and MARY★RUE

Wow shows how much I pay attention. I have music from all those bands, and I didn't even know that. XD

See guys, this is what happens when you don't give too much information when you upload stuff! :)

to me it doesnt matter whether there female in a band as vocalists or others as long as they can churn out good music than thats good........among the great bands with females in it, in my opinion are Do As Infinity (still the best in my opinion),gallhammer ,freenote, high and mighty color..............
